The Greater Concord area, also known as the Capital Region, is the center of New Hampshire, figuratively and literally. Encompassing an area from Bradford to the west, Pittsfield to the east, Allenstown and Dunbarton to the south, and Canterbury to the north, the Region’s hub is Concord, the state capital.

The area truly represents the essence of New Hampshire. Concord, as the seat of government both for the state and Merrimack County, is a vibrant small city with an estimated 2005 population of just over 42,000. The city boasts a bustling downtown where within a few blocks are a number of unique shops, many historical sites, excellent restaurants, museums, the Capitol Center for the Arts, and the Capitol Building, built in 1819 of New Hampshire granite and the oldest state capitol in which the legislative branches still meet in their original chambers.

Outside of the city are many charming New England towns and villages that provide a living history of New Hampshire’s rural past.  Among these is Penacook area, which makes up the northern end of the city. The name comes from the Penacook tribe that lived in the area and the first section of Concord to be settled. In fact, Penacook, or Pennycook as it was called in Colonial days, was once the name for the entire area now known as Concord.

Two other notable and distinctive communities in the Greater Concord area are Pembroke, and Canterbury, home to the Canterbury Shaker Village, the last active community of the Shaker sect renowned for their inventiveness and their distinctive style of furniture, and now a museum of Shaker life.

The Region as a whole, then, offers a quality of living to rival any area in the country. Excellent public and private schools, one of the finest health care networks in northern New England, a rich cultural environment, and a central location with easy access to Boston, the seacoast, and the mountains, make Greater Concord a special place.
