The Greater Nashua area, located in southern Hillsborough County, has long been characterized as the “Gateway to New Hampshire” because of its proximity to the Massachusetts border. Consisting of the City of Nashua, the state’s second largest city, and the surrounding communities of Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield, Merrimack, Milford, and Wilton, this diverse and dynamic region is home to more than 185,000 people.

The area is particularly desirable because of prudent growth planning on the part of several communities in the region.  While Greater Nashua is one of the fastest growing parts of the state, nowhere else in southern New Hampshire do you find quite the same juxtaposition of an urban center with surrounding communities such as Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, and Milford, which have been able to retain so much traditional New England village character. Several communities, most notably Hollis and Litchfield, have also been able to continue to sustain agriculture.

Greater Nashua is also highly desirable because of its accessibility to the high-tech industries between Boston and Nashua along US Route 3. Train service into Massachusetts is now available as well. The area’s being so close to the Massachusetts border has also fueled extraordinary growth in the retail sector, especially at the southern end of Nashua, where people from the Bay State regularly flock to take advantage of New Hampshire’s lack of a sales tax.

In addition to shopping, the area boasts all the other factors that make for good quality of life, including schools, medical care, and a wide range of recreational and cultural activities.
